| If your last post had ended in: "Flank walked over and opened the crate," the post would have been the same length, plus seven words, and progressed the story significantly more than it does in its current state. Really I just hate going into Cinematic Lock-Down, which is a thing I just made up to describe those times when I make big post dumps to move things forwards all by myself, instead of allowing players to make their own decisions. I don't want to get into the habit of doing it for every little thing, nor do I want you guys to get into the habit of expecting it from me in lieu of doing things for yourselves. Beneath it all, I'm still trying to hammer out where this RP stands on the sliding scale of logical linear progression versus creative freedom — like deciding if I want Garry's mod or Mass Effect 2. Loosely speaking, I'm currently trying for a stance wherein I set up the key elements of the world and you can go up to bits of it and say: "Dad, what does this do?" And I'll say: "Well, son, this is the refrigerator. It is huge and white and has a number of childhood scribble-drawings held onto its door by brightly-coloured magnets in the shape of letters." "So what's inside?" "Well let's see now: there's a bottle of apple juice, some assorted vegetables, a bottle of cheap pinot grigio, a carton of milk, some rather mouldy-looking cheese and a kilo of plastic explosives rigged up to oh god it's a bomb." ...That actually sounds almost like a fun RP I just thought up. Or maybe I simply like the idea of blowing up nagging little kids who ask dumb questions Lazer Lazer Lazer. I think I've lost track of the point I was making. | |

| Very valid point, but maybe it's just that you've set up the story in such a way that deviating from the decided mission would take the story elsewhere. I read the thread, on Ezekiel, the Pondera and on the market district of Las Thadas, there wasn't a specific guide to follow. The message that hung in the air was "Do what you want, so long as it's along these lines."
Now, with the mission on LT and now Sapphire Point, there is a specific mission to follow. The players can't introduce their own roundabout means of accomplishing the goal without taking the story in their own direction, which as I recall, is a form of God-modding. Not saying that taking the story into one's own hands for a bit is sacred territory, but the idea is to obey.
In my personal opinion, you should split the Rangers up in Sapphire so that they make their own progress. I was apprehensive about opening the crate because I wasn't sure if you were going to wow us with a nifty little gadget that exudes a corona of importance, or if it were a "Make up whatever's in the damn thing" moment like Drago did in S3VEN. | |

| I see what you mean; I suppose really I'm just being stubborn on principle because I'm uncomfortable with the amount of direct responsibility my own characters have for moving things forward at this point; I don't want to write a fanfic here, but It's my own fault for painting myself into a corner. The reason I did that in S3VEN was because a lot of the areas I had planned involved heavy control of the situation, so I needed people to still have a sense of freedom. My solution was allowing minor godmodding. Obviously, that probably isn't going to work here; I don't think the addition of a vacuum-bullet gun would enhance this Roleplay all that much. | |
