You know, these things?
They spawn in the Nether, and attack by shooting fireballs at you. However, you can deflect them with good timing, sending them back. Thus, they will keep firing at you, and you can keep hitting em; back. TENNIS!

I made a pool for my house. :3
It's great because now I can jump off the top of my tower, land in it and not die. A quick way down!
EDIT: I just went for a Minecart ride around my base and then went to go look around in my watch tower. When I saw my minecarts move around my wall, I saw this:
HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN?! It was adorable though, because the Creeper was just casually looking around as it was speeding away. x3 Silly Creeper, Minecarts are for humans!

Can any mob climb ladders or open doors? I'm not sure and I don't want anything climbing up the side of my guard tower.

The Minecraft Wiki says that Creepers can go up ladders, but I've never seen or heard of that happening.
Spiders can scale walls, but they can't if said walls lead directly into a block or overhang. eg. this image
This is why I have a Minecart track around my base, it doubles as Spider protection.
As for doors, I'm pretty sure nothing except you can control them.
