Serebii is a crazy place. I love it.

I only go there to find out things about pokemon. The Pokemon of the week/day is really useful to me, and the pokedex pages are good for knowing what move comes at what level.

This is turning into more of a "Talking with each other" thread than a "Talking with Frostie" one. :U

I don't want to sound like an idiot, but I have to ask about that conversation. When you say 1/3 ≠ .333... You mean how like Pi ≠ 3.141592... It's just a close approximate, yes? But then you do realize .9999 has been decided as truly equaling 1, and that that's true. Also, if .9999... = 1, and 1= 3/3, then couldn't you still assume that 3/3 = .99999... and then that 2/3 Pretty much equals .666... and 1/3 still PRETTY much equals .333...

I'm agreeing with everything you said, I just wanted to confirm.

EDIT: Actually, I'm still a bit confused as to why you think .999... ≠ 1, I get your logic, but I still don't see why it counters the logic people use to explain why .999... = 1

DOUBLE EDIT: I'm sorry if this sounds stupid, and I know I'm younger than you, and some of you still think I'm just some random little 6th grader who thinks he's smart, so please don't reply with anything like that, I'm just curious. I still believe that .99999.... = 1 And I encourage you to try and change my belief, Gelatino, I welcome your knowledge. I just find it weird when Wikipedia and all my previous teachers were wrong. D:

Fact: You don't sound like that at all.
My opinion: I like to see 0.999... as 0.999... because that is the value it represents. While in most areas of mathematics and science it is logical (and encouraged) to round it up to 1, it doesn't make sense to say that said recurring decimal IS equal to the whole value of 1. We all know that it is continuous because with each significant figure it gets a little closer to the whole value of 1 but not entirely. Therefore it is a different value, even if only by increasingly small amounts.

The whole "0.333... +0.666... =0.999..." makes sense, but what got me thinking was the part where "0.333... =1/3, 0.666... =2/3, therefore 3/3 =0.999..." because at a first glance it seems to make sense.

However, since the recurring decimals never actually reach the value their respective fractions represent, they aren't reliable as values that can be substituted into any equation. By my reckoning, 0.333... is a theoretical way of representing 1/3. That is, it's just the closest we can come the the value in decimal form. There is no decimal that gives us a third of 1, so we are left with this.

So therefore, 1/3 =/= 0.333... because the latter does not represent the whole value.

You could also put it this way:

x = 4.9r
10x = 49.9r
9x = 45
x = 5

Dark: Why thank you for being nice about answering, and I do get your point. I still say .999... is one when using simplified terms, but I get why it's also true that .999...≠ 1. So I guess both sides of the argument are correct, in a sense. Kinda...

Ep: Doesn't that show .9999... is 1? Because if 5 equals x and x also equals 4.9999... that would show they are the same

I've aloud myself to come to my belief, which is I will still accept .999... as 1, but also remember that, in a way, it's at the same time not. It's one of those interesting paradox-like statements that I find interesting. But understandable.

1/3 does not equal .333

Simple as that. Those two expressions cannot be used interchangeably. Anybody who does so is wrong.

Put simply: 1/3 cannot be expressed as a decimal, so if you try to work with it as a decimal then you are wrong.

I'm basically saying that except replace 1 with 1/3 and replace 2 with .333
