Welcome to

THE SCIENCE THREAD
(totally created by Gelatino95 and Lazernugget)

Here you may discuss anything having to do with all fields of science.
  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Astronomy
  • Archaeology
  • Microbiology
  • Chemistry
...and so many more.

You may also ask any questions about science if you don't understand something. Our team of trained gorillas would be glad to research anything you wonder about.

Have fun, and good science!

Awesome! Time for some of my type of FUN. happy. !!!!

Did you know there are 7 different types of ways to measure temp. ?

Did you know we've captured anti-matter?

Did you know that inertia is the force of movement forward?

Did you know gravity is the force of being pulled to something (Plus other definitions)

Did you know plasma is ionized gas?

YEAH!!!!!!!!

Speaking of organic, the fans all want to know: what is it that makes things "organic"?

Well Gelatino95, the answer is currently unknown by all philosophic studiers and naturalists.

So far we have no clue to why we have life and if we are alone.
How many times would you have to go around the earth's diameter to go a light year? (I know)

Actually, you're WRONG, Lazer. You're analyzing it too carefully.

Well, legend has it... that organic matter is made up of compounds. Compounds are atoms that are boded to each other. We'll discuss bonding later, if we feel like it. The compounds that make up organic matter must be made up of two elements: Carbon and Hydrogen.

As long as a molecule (a fancy name for a compound) has carbon and hydrogen in it, regardless of the other atoms, is is considered organic. Pretty neat, huh?

BTW, Lazer, this thread is supposed to be discussing science, not quizzing people on it. If you know what the answer is, please say so. Unless you actually don't know the answer; in that case, you should make it clear that you don't know.

By the way, I actually have a question: would archaeology be considered a field of science? I wasn't quite sure about it when I put it up there.

Regardless of whether it is or not, I know a lot about dinosaurs. When I started reading Jurassic Park, it got me hooked on dinosaurs, and now I have a big pop-up book on them. So if anyone has any archaeology questions, please ask!

Just one thing, do you mean Paleontology? Archaeology is the study of ancient humans (I don't mean to offend you, I just thought I would point that out). Though, a pop up book? That sounds really cool! Also, it is also good have someone else that knows a lot about dinosaurs. Alien (The Alien is smiling if you can't notice)

I wouldn't entirely consider archarelogy a field of science, i'd figure it to be a type of history (in a way).

I don't know very much about quantum physics. All I know about is quantum foam, as explained in the book, Timeline, by Michael Crichton.

Apparently, very small objects (like protons and electrons, for example) are not perfect spheres or do not have perfect edges. The surface of these objects is arranged in a bubble-like texture known as quantum foam.

I know right? Well there is another theory that every movement ever made has almost infinite outcomes, that all create other universes. (I'm writing a book on that theory)

Hmm, I wonder... according to your theory, by typing this, have I altered the flow of time or is the event of me typing this a set cause of the current dimension which I am in's own unique timeline? Because I believe the same thing you do, yet I am stuck on what everything I have done has affected time, or if it was preplanned through a predetermined timeline.

I believe that there are no "predetermined time lines" and that history is made up as it goes along. You can think of our own history and the flow of time as a "time line" that is being made as time goes on. Every time a decision is made, then the line splits into an infinite number of other lines and their individual time lines continue on from there, continuing to split into infinite other lines.

Maybe you can include that in your book. Wink

PostSubject: Re: The Science Thread   The Science Thread EmptyFri Nov 26, 2010 5:31 am

Since it's thanksgiving, I decided to share a very short lesson on organic macromolecules.

First of all, macromolecules are molecules made of a lot of atoms. Organic molecules, as we discussed earlier, are made of carbon and hydrogen.

So there are four groups of organic macromolecules: Carbohydrates, Proteins, Lipids, and Nucleic acids. Carbohydrates include sugar and starch. They can be found in thanksgiving foods such as potatoes (starch) and pies (sugars) Proteins are used in the body for many purposes, but they can be found in any kind of meat, like turkey or ham. Finally, Lipids are nonpolar molecules that repel water. They make up all kinds of oils (unsaturated fat) and any fat you find in your ham (saturated fats) The property of lipids to repel water is one of the reasons that oil sits on top of water; the other reason it that they are less dense than water.

EDIT: added a poll. Tell us your favorite field of science. I chose archaeology/paleontology.
