I most surely will still be on vacation until Sunday, effectively preventing my participation this week. Have fun, guys!

I already told you that I had important studying to do on that day. :V However I'm on easter holidays now so I'll be good for this saturday.

That's 5PM, so I kind of doubt it. I'm not exactly sure when my flight is, but I know it's in the daytime.

Game night status: I HAVE DONE IT. I HAVE CREATED A SPACE STATION 13 SERVER!
If we choose SS13 as the game, prepare to be welcomed upon Talastation 13. (...Yeah Jadstation 13 sounds better, but, you know.)

I can confirm this. I've also been scouting out Warframe with Tala and Eps: It's a lot of fun. The only downsides to it are the limit of four players per lobby (so we'd probably have multiple lobbies running and just switch between them when we felt like it) and some glitches in the internal contacts system and intermittence of the steam overlay. Not completely debilitating, but perhaps a slight speed-bump in organising games, which is why I'm placing it second to SS13.
Subject: Re: Game Night — Every Saturday at 10pm GMT! Fri Mar 29, 2013 5:29 pm
The winner is Space Station 13, and I swear I wasn't expecting to cast the deciding vote this week — I just held out to determine whether or not Tala would get a server running.
Alrighty then, allow me to once more dig up all my blurb on Space Station 13. >:}
Release the Kraken!:
Space Station 13 is a free online game I was introduced to a while back wherein the players, which can be of basically any number (Really Yogstation? What do you even do with 80+ players?), take on a variety of jobs in order to keep a space station running and protect it from the machinations of traitors, aliens (everyone's favourite face-hugger-acid-blooded-oh-god-its-tongue-has-a-mouth variety), meteor showers, revolutionaries, changelings, cultists, rogue AI's, wizards, black holes, incompetent superiors, clowns which some severelybored roboticisthas provided with a mech, janitors that don't put up 'wet floor' signs...
...All the threats on that list (with the sole exception of meteor showers) are also player-controlled. >:} But then again, when you're still discovering things it's enjoyable / challenging enough just to keep the station in working order / explore / try new things.
It's a 2D game played from a top-down perspective, generally with a focus on RPing, and more things to do than you can shake a stick at.
Click for full-size map!
Full list of jobs here.
There are a few things that take a bit of getting used to (including the game's complexity as a whole, which is softened by the presence of other players who know what they're doing) are the movement and the GUI; fortunately, the wiki is here to help, as is anyone else you find yourself playing with.
To get the game, download the BYOND client here and once you've created an account, launch the application and navigate the drop-down menu through 'file => open location' and punch in the IP address of the server you want to join!
Before the night
- Download Byond from the link in the above spoiler and create an account. - Have a look at the jobs list linked above too; or try this other wiki for something a little more dry but accurate to the version of the game we're running (you'll notice the Clown and Mime jobs are conspicuously absent). A while ago I made a list of jobs that we'd need to run the station properly with a small crew, in descending order of importance, so you might like to concentrate on them:
Core Jobs:
-- Captain / HoP -- AI - Chief Engineer Covers Station Engineer and Atmospheric Technician jobs. - Chief Medical Officer Covers Medical Doctor, Virologist and Chemist jobs. - Research Director Covers Roboticist and Scientist jobs. - Head of Security Covers Security Officer, Warden and Detective jobs. - Quartermaster Covers Cargo Technician and Shaft Miner jobs. - Chef / Bartender / Botanist (Combinable in a pinch!)
We'll mainly ignore the parts about delegating jobs, because we won't have people to delegate to. We'll sort out who exactly does what before the game starts — feel free to pitch in your preference on this thread! - Pick out a job you'd like to play, and a second / third choice, and read up on them — there are often guides in addition to the job pages, which are always very useful to have on hand!
On the night
- Get on the GAC steam group chat, where we'll be distributing the server's IP and coordinating things. - If you're new to the game or need a refresher on the game's basics, keep this and this handy, as well as the map above. - Once the game's started, if you have a question then click the 'admin' tab above the game's message feed and click 'adminhelp' to send a private message to me — this avoids giving away what you're doing to anyone else, which can be important in certain game-modes. >:}

I'm looking forward to this and hope to see you all there! This brings me to the fact that I've heard a couple of people won't be able to make Saturday night — as such I've added a poll which it's important to vote on ASAP! I'd like to have as many votes collected by tomorrow as possible; excuse the short notice.

I'd kinda like to be the Research Director, as my experience with this game up to this point has been solely in the cargo branch of things (and subsequently has been excruciatingly boring), and Delta suggested robotics to me. :P
I was kinda hoping for L4D2 to be chosen for this week, but I suppose there's always next week. :/
EDIT: I happen to be the person who voted for "can't do Sunday but can do Saturday". Just so you know.

Well, unless the one person who hasn't voted yet (apart from Nox, who I know can't make either) wishes to speak up and say they definitely can't do today, then we shall be going ahead with tonight.
It's a shame we can't have everyone, but at least with this method we reach a functional compromise. See you all tonight or I will wind your guts out on a pointy stick.

My exams are finally over. Before they start again next month I guess I could try to squeeze some time for the weekends.
I can play almost all of the free games other than Planetside 2 and Blacklight Retribution. My single core would burn up into tiny ashes. The games I currently have in the list are...
-L4D2 -Minecraft -Halo 4 -Alien Swarm -TF2
(Not in any order of preferences)

Great. If you're up for trying something new, come join us on SS13 tonight. If the stars smile upon us and Tala gets online, we may have time before 10pm GMT to go over the basics beforehand — to some extent or other I reckon most of us have already had some measure of time on it.

Thanks for joining us, everyone, we had a great turnout and I hope you enjoyed the game!
A summary for those who only saw part of the action:
Release the Kraken!:
In the early stages of the game everything in Engineering things got off to a bad start and got worse — in a good, Space-Station-13-y way of course. An engineer beat himself into unconsciousness with his tools, giving the Chief Medical Officer his much-needed first patient, and meanwhile the Chief Engineer and Captain continued setting up the singularity — accidentally triggering a plasma leak in Engineering which flooded the south side of the station with toxic gas. They both succumbed to the toxin in Atmospherics shortly thereafter, and so the station was bereaved of its leader and its electricity in one fell swoop, and madness began to descend — welcome to Space Station 13 errybody!
The Head of Security (HoS) and Research Director (RD) (traitor!) arrived in medbay for no reason that I could at the time register, and a scuffle ensued wherein the Head of Security was attacked by the RD with a circular saw — unfortunately for the RD, tazer and cuffs beat saw every time. He was quickly subdued, but released again without charge when he stated that the incident was an accident. After quite some badgering from the AI, the HoS was convinced to try and retrieve the bodies of the Captain and Chief Engineer for cloning. However, it seemed someone had gotten slightly the wrong idea about the 'traitor' gamemode and the HoS suddenly turned on the newly-arrived Head of Personnel with all the weapons at his disposal; it wasn't much of a fight. Both the Captain and Head of Personnel were played by Epsilon. I think he might have been a little annoyed by this turn of events.
The Head of Security, now handcuffed by his former robotic servant Officer Beepsky but continuing his fit of space-madness, made for the airlocks in the escape-arm of the station, wearing his space-suit, and was swiftly trapped in between the airlocks by the AI.
Meanwhile the Research Director, bored of being stuck in his department with no power, which would otherwise have enabled him to build robots, took a more pro-active approach to his objectives. As the Chief Medical Officer was roped in by the AI to help contain the Head of Security, the good doctor was intercepted by the RD and beheaded by an energy sword. Unfortunately the AI saw this happening, and began bolting down doors to stop the traitor from making progress: The traitor-RD swiftly found himself trapped in the escape arm, right by the airlock in which the Head of Security was trapped. When it became clear the traitor was attempting to cut through the windows to reach the Head of Security — and thence, perhaps, pilfer his tools and space-suit — the AI decided to unbolt the exterior airlocks. The HoS promptly launched himself off into space and was never heard from again.
Following this the AI took two measures: He called the escape shuttle, which would eventually end the round, and set the air in the escape arm to panic syphon. The traitor was soon neutralised by oxygen deprivation, and died cursing the name of Isaac Asimov.
With everyone aboard the station dead or inactive or an AI called T.A.L.V.O.X, the round was set to end — but shortly before the escape shuttle arrived a roboticist, arriving rather late, popped in. Unfortunately the doors leading to the escape arm were still bolted and the AI had switched into standby mode.
So, the round ended with the AI and Roboticist stranded on the station with the inactive janitor and Quartermaster — both of whom had gotten on with things with a relative lack of fuss and hence almost completely eluded my sight (especially the Quartermaster; what did you get up to that round Darkshadow?). The Chief Engineer, Captain, Head of Personnel, Research Director and Chief Medical Officer were all painted various shades of dead; the formerly-injured engineer was naked somewhere in the medbay, having become inactive after being healed, and the Head of Security was out in space somewhere. Doubtless he would go on to have many adventures we shall never hear of — maybe he found the derelict space station? Maybe he landed on the mining asteroid? Maybe he discovered the clown planet? Maybe he forgot to hook up his oxygen tank and breath-mask properly and suffocated in space, cold and forlorn.
We then went on to play a more modest game with the people who remained, the notable events of which included the RD building a security mech and promptly being stunned and cuffed by it and the Chemist's day being completely ruined by a gigantic homogeneous lifeform eating its way through the bottom of the station and draining the atmosphere from vast swathes of the station.
I think overall it was a learning experience for us all — I hope it wasn't too bewildering. I'll probably try and organise some more games of SS13 in future, separate from this thread, so watch your back if you're online between 4 and 11pm GMT. >:} ___________________________________________

It's stuff that other people have made that you can spawn into your game. Most of them don't need any downloads from other games
Another thing we could try is Gmod Towers, but that may be difficult to access depending on times.
Subject: Re: Game Night — Every Saturday at 10pm GMT! Thu Apr 04, 2013 12:19 am
If we play Dungeon Defenders or Garry's Mod, there's still the problem of some of us not owning the games — of the people on the OP list, the following do not own DD or Gmod:
- Plague - Ferrety - DarkStar - NOX (EDIT: Found you. Has Gmod; not DD) - Razo
To me, that seems like rather too many people to exclude; if there was a sale on, as there was for DD in the first week we did this and for Gmod a little while ago, then it'd at least be a reasonable ask to get hold of the games; but as it stands I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to ask five people to drop a non-insignificant amount of funds into a game just to play it for one night. This goes for L4D2 as well, which is even more expensive. People listed above; can I have your opinions on this issue? ________________________________
My own preferences are as follows:
1. Alien Swarm 2. No More Room in Hell 3. Space Station 13 4. The Hidden 5. Rig of Rods 6. Zombie Panic Source
Alien Swarm and NMRIH up there because I sense I ought to make some effort to encourage trying new things, despite hankering for more SS13 or Hidden — I think we'd all be on a better footing and have more fun if we gave SS13 another shot. Alien Swarm, though I've said it before, is sort of like a top-down Aliens-meets-L4D deal by Left 4 Dead's own creators, and it's free.
Rig of Rods and Zombie Panic I know less about, but might be interested to try.

I can understand the problem with the cost of Garry's Mod. Dungeon Defenders was on sale for 5 bucks for a while after this thread was made, so if they chose not to buy it despite the possiblility of us playing it then that's their problem. Besides that, I refuse to play space station 13 two weeks in a row

Well I'd be very interested to hear what would interest you, even if it's something we've already done or isn't currently on the list. It'd be preferable to the profound silence I've gotten this week from everyone else but Drago, Eps and Kitty.
I'm extending the voting to the end of today; don't feel there's no chance to get the game you want up there — we've only had a handful of votes so far!
